I create art as part of my meditation practice and "Kovida" is the Dharma name given to me by my Theravada Buddhist teacher, hence the name of this website. I use Sumi and India ink with occasional watercolor and gouache accents on Washi (rice paper). The nature of ink and brush along with the absorbency of the paper encourages a "bleed-through" quality that blurs boundaries between objects and reminds me of the transient interconnectedness of all phenomena. I take comfort in letting go of my preferences and surrendering to whatever happens when I bring these elements together. My art and paintings never turn out exactly as planned and that's what makes them useful to my practice. Each painting reflects the uncertain, everchanging mystery of life and I'm merely a participant in the process.
